The Bavarian Representative Office in China

About us

Founded in 1997 and setting forth and developing what are now three decades of close and intensive ties between Bavaria and China, the state of Bavaria’s representative office in China serves as the link between the state and China, and especially to the provinces of Shandong (since 1987) and Guangdong (since 2004).

China in Bavaria

The Chinese community in Bavaria is very large. It is comprised of more than 130 companies, among them such famous names as Huawei Technologies, Pearl River Piano, ZTE, Yingli Solar and ET Solar; and of some 11,000 Chinese nationals. Of the latter, one third live in metropolitan Munich. The community is also comprised of the 3,000 Chinese attending Bavaria’s institutions of higher education. To foster this interchange of expertise, Bavarian-Chinese Centers of Higher Education were recently set up in Bayreuth and Qingdao. Business, cultural and educational ties are fostered by the direct flights linking Bavaria with such major Chinese metropolises as Beijing, Shanghai, Shenyang and Hong Kong. Fifteen communities in Bavaria have entered into partnerships with Chinese counterparts.

Bavaria in China

Bilateral trade of more than €24.5 billion makes the Peoples’ Republic of China by far Bavaria’s most important trading partner in Asia. Some 1,800 Bavarian companies successfully trade with and operate in China. They include such heavyweights as Siemens, BMW and Audi, and a large number of SMEs (small and medium-sized enterprises). Of them, some 700 have set up operations in the country. Favorite bases in China are such metropolises as Shanghai, Beijing and the Pearl River delta. Another popular base: Shandong, in which some 30 Bavarian companies do business. Among them: Siemens, Refratechnik, Munich Re / Ergo, Rieter Ingolstadt Spinnereimaschinenbau AG, S+S Separation und Sorting Technology GmbH, and WMH Herion Antriebstechnik GmbH.
