Freyung-Grafenau
Industrial diversification is the key to economic success. That is why a broad-based SME-oriented spectrum of industry, skilled crafts, trade and services forms the basis of the economic area in the corner of Bavaria nestled between Bohemia and Upper Austria. The glass and wood-working industries have a strong tradition in the region. And plastics-processing businesses, electrical engineering as well as the metal and automotive sectors also make a big contribution to the multifaceted range offered by the predominantly small and medium-sized companies. Other major pillars of the region are tourism and the skilled crafts.
A highly motivated and dedicated population, well-qualified skilled and executive staff as well as target-oriented industrial development and an active regional management are vital locational factors in the County of Freyung-Grafenau.
Another decisive factor for further development is not least its favourable strategic location in the “border triangle” (Dreiländereck) and the resulting good contacts with its neighbours in the Czech Republic and Upper Austria. There is no mistaking that the County of ‘FRG’ makes a good platform for economic development. With increasing environmental sensitivity and a changing sense of value orientation, more and more importance is being attached to the beneficial locational factors available in the County, the particularly strong ties to the company and the pro-business climate, when it comes to decisions about business locations.
After the biggest enlargement round since the creation of the European Union (EU) a further ten candidate states acceded to the EU on 1 May 2004, bringing the number of member states up to 27. At the time, the area of the EU expanded by about one third and the population increased by 72 million people to close on 460 million in total. Europe thus became the largest economic area in the world.
This enlargement round presented great challenges for Bavaria as a whole, but in particular for its border regions and therefore also for the County of Freyung-Grafenau, and called for enormous efforts on all sides. While in the past it had still been separated from Eastern Europe by the Iron Curtain, the region was then thrust from its marginal position back to the centre of Europe in political as well as economic terms, along with all the resulting chances and opportunities now waiting to be actively exploited.
