Sector in brief
The use of hydraulic power has a long tradition in Bavaria. And other renewable energies are also becoming much more important. Bavaria's energy policy offers companies huge potential for growth.
Energy provision in Germany will change rapidly over the next few years. The transition to alternative energies presents great potential for investment and will give a huge boost to energy technology. Bavaria is in an outstanding position and offers energy technology companies ideal opportunities for growth. All the key energy sources are represented in Bavaria: hydraulic power, photovoltaics, wind energy, biomass, solar thermal energy, ambient heat and geothermal energy for electricity and heat generation. Bavaria is leading the way in hydraulic power and generated almost 12 million kilowatt hours from it in 2010 – more than any other German state. By the end of the same year, almost 40 per cent of Germany's total solar power capacity was installed in Bavaria. Wind power in Bavaria is still a relatively small segment compared to the two giants of hydraulic and solar power. The state is therefore working to expand wind energy in a space-saving way that protects the environment and agriculture. One thing is certain: Bavaria will continue to play a leading role in energy technology in future, too.

Energy research is being driven forward with great commitment in Bavaria. University and non-university institutions have capacity for research into energy technology. Examples include the Energie Campus Nuremberg, which is working on implementing a sustainable energy economy based on renewable energies, and TUM.Energy – an inter-faculty research initiative at the Munich School of Engineering. There, scientists from a range of disciplines work together on topics such as the expansion of renewable energies, electromobility and energy efficiency. In addition, companies benefit from the excellent education opportunities provided by Bavarian universities.
Energy research is one of the focuses of Bavaria's research and technology policy. The state provided funding to six research projects and three structural measures in energy research in 2012. The two-year budget for 2013/14 added two new projects, bringing the total investment in the research segment to more than EUR 60 million in 2013 and 2014. The projects receiving funding include fundamental research in organic photovoltaics and application-based research into resource-saving and intelligent living.
Bavaria has attractive information and cooperation hubs in the form of the Energy Technology cluster and the Energy Forum. The Energy Technology cluster intensifies cooperation between business and science, in order to further increase companies' innovative strength and thus generate value creation in Bavaria. The activities are focused on four key topics: renewable energies; energy efficiency in electricity and heat generation; consumption; and energy storage systems and transmission and distribution networks in power supply.
The Bavarian Energy Forum is an information platform, in particular for the fields of rational energy use, renewable energies and new energy technologies. The Energy Forum provides transparency on ongoing developments and innovation processes and reinforces the existing range of information and advice on offer.
